Google launches Grasshopper web app to teach basic coding
There are so many courses, and YouYube channels around, it’s hard to know what is good and what is just bad. Fortunately, Google has its own program for teaching coding skills to novice coders.
Grasshopper launched in 2018 and teaches coding skills on your mobile device. Until recently, the app was only available on iOS Android.
In the South African news, we recently saw the story of Standard Bank seeking to lay off thousands of employees as they focus more on online banking.
Now more than ever, it is essential that we develop skills that will be in demand in the future or that will empower us.
The vision behind the project was to empower users to learn coding skills on the go. Users could use their commute or the time between appointments to add skills.
What is the grasshopper?
Grasshopper is part of the largest Grow with Google initiative which aims to “create economic opportunities for all”. Since 2018, Google has seen millions of users use their mobile devices to participate in Grasshoppers coding courses.
While Grasshopper’s portability has always been the biggest benefit if you’ve ever tried to do serious work on your phone, you’ll know that the smaller screen is less than ideal for longer sessions.
In response to this limitation, Google has now released a desktop version of Grasshopper that will allow users to continue their coding training on their computers and laptops when it suits them best.
The introduction of the desktop curriculum also makes it easier to teach coding around more visual topics, like designing a website.
Additional classes added to the Grasshopper framework
In addition to making Grasshopper available on Desktop, the Google team is also adding two new classes that have been designed specifically for the laptop or desktop user: Use a code editor, and Introduction to web pages.
The aim of the class is to enable even a complete beginner to be able to create a simple web page in just four lessons.
With Grasshopper having already had nearly two million users and expected to grow only with the release of the desktop version of the program, now is a great time to go out and sign up.
